Ethnicity

The Roman Empire continued to be a magnet for people who wanted to better themselves and their lives, and generally continued to welcome them and their cultural contributions to the commonwealth. At times people of minority ethnic groups could rise to high office or court rank. In addition to the dominant, Greek-speaking Rômaic population, there were Arabs (Christian as well as Muslim), Armenians, Bulgars, English, Franks, Germans, Georgians, Persians and Turks. Names for various ethnic groups may be found in the "Resources" page of this website.

While members of the Heaireia Palatiou take on various characters depending on the narrative being portrayed in any given event, it is also common for them either to adopt a name of the time, or to develop a fuller “persona” (or several) relating to the period and area for general use in displays.

Personae

A “persona” is the hypothetical identity of a person who might have lived in the Heaireia’s period and region. A persona has a name, ethnic group and some parameters of its place in its society. These parameters may include social class, occupation, and relationships with other personae in use.

Personae have two uses:
They are the roles participants play in the group's functions and performances. At times scenes may be scripted for a persona, but otherwise thay are used for structured role-playing guided by the relevant historical information.

The parameters of a persona, especially ethnic group and social class, are very helpful in guiding what props- like clothing, accessories, tableware and so on- a member could or should acquire.

A member may have more than one persona to allow them to play different roles in a historically and socially effective manner.

A couple of examples of personae presently in use in the Heaireia Palatiou
